We internet readers are mostly internet skimmers. We don’t always have time to read the WHOLE article.
Allthosewordssmashedtogether on your phone’s screen can be too much to take in. We get the gist, and we move on.
Consider it a bonus when someone reads every word you have written. If your post is easier to read, however, more people will stay on the page and get your message.
Here are eight tips to lighten the load for your reader.
1. Make Sure Your Site is Mobile-Friendly
Nothing will stop a reader in their tracks faster than having to search off the screen for the second half of your sentence.
2. Add Images
A picture speaks a thousand words–so you don’t have to.
3. Use Subheadings
See, like I am using them now. Very skim-able.
4. Use Bullet Points
- They are easy to read
- They break up blocks of text
- They use fewer words
5. Keep Paragraphs Short
Three to five lines at the most. Often this means your paragraph is just one or two sentences long.
6. Use Short Active Sentences
The internet is just not the place for rambling. Attention span… short.
7. Call out Important Words
Don’t go overboard here, but you can USE ALL CAPS, or put keywords in bold, or change their color to catch your reader’s eye.
8. Put Your Most Compelling Info at the Top
Eye tracking studies show that people spend the most time at the top of the page. This is the time to pull them in. Make them want to read more.
Go into a post you have already written and break up big blocks of text into one- or two-sentence paragraphs. Also, next time you write a post, make a rough outline first, and VOILA you have your subheadings. These changes will go a long way to making your post easier to read. And, if people can easily skim it first, they just might read the WHOLE ARTICLE.
