Writing the content for your website or blog can be fun, it is a great resource for your patients, and it will attract new people to your practice. But it does take time, and sometimes you need to consider out-sourcing this service.
Before you do, read Amy’s post, Searching for Mr. Write: What to Look for in a Medical Content Writer, and then take a look at your marketing budget. The good news is that content marketing is one of the least costly forms of marketing, so you might already have budgeted what you need.
One of the best places to start looking into this cost is on the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) website. AMWA does a periodic Salary Survey of their members, and their 2015 results just came in.
AMWA started doing these salary surveys in 1989 because they say,
Salaries documented on typical career websites are unreliable because of low numbers of respondents and a lack of clarity regarding the professional setting.
Their most recent survey was conducted in 2015 and asked about income earned in 2014. They got information from 1,292 medical writers and editors who are actively working, either as salaried employees or freelancers.
Rates for Freelance Medical Writers
Freelance rates come in a large range depending on years of experience, education, and geographic location. According to the AMWA survey, 60% of freelancers billed hourly or by the day, a quarter billed by the project, and the rest billed by the word, page, or a combo of methods.
The mean hourly rate for writers was $112 and for editors was $73. Check out the infographic below for more detailed results.
Cost of Salaried Medical Writers
About twice as many survey respondents were salaried employees, and their yearly income depended on experience, education, geography, employment level, and company size.
Overall mean income was $90,200, and income specific to communications/advertising (this is where content marketing falls) was $85,900.
It is interesting to note that in addition to the regular benefits of salaried employment, most surveyed also worked remotely at least one day a week.
